660 new cases, ICU cases in triple digits

COVID-19 | Today marked the eighth consecutive day that Malaysia reported a record number of active Covid-19 cases.

Malaysia reported 660 new Covid-19 cases as of noon today, bringing the total active cases to a new record of 5,345.

The number of patients with Covid-19 who required intensive care was 101, compared to 98 yesterday, of which 32 require respiratory assistance.

The previous highest number of Covid-19 patients requiring intensive care (108) was recorded on April 3.

Sabah continues to contribute to the largest number of new cases (443), followed by Selangor (76) and Kedah (60).

Four new deaths were also recorded, all in Sabah. The details of the deceased, all with a history of illnesses, are as follows:

– Malaysian woman, 84, died at Duchess of Kent Hospital, Sandakan

– 83-year-old Malaysian male, died at Duchess of Kent Hospital, Sandakan

– Foreign woman, 36 years old, died in the Semporna Hospital

– Malaysian male, 59 years old, who died in Tawau Hospital.

The total number of deaths officially attributed to Covid-19 is currently 163.

Only two of the new cases did not involve local broadcasts. Of the 658 local infections, 618 cases affected Malaysian citizens and 40 cases affected foreigners.

Chief Health Officer Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, who provided the press conference while in home quarantine, said six new groups were detected.

The breakdown of the new Covid-19 cases transmitted locally today is as follows:

– Jawi cluster prison – 3 cases

– Voluntary screening – 2 cases

Labuan (18 new cases)

– Detection of health workers – 9 cases

– Returned from Sabah – 6 cases
