KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 6,167 traffic accident deaths were recorded in 2019, and 64% of the deaths involved motorcyclists and passenger passengers, Deputy Transport Minister Hasbi Habibollah told Dewan Negara today.

He said Putrajaya takes the matter seriously, adding that various agencies under the ministry have conducted numerous campaigns and advocacy efforts across the country to raise awareness about road safety.

Hasbi said the ministry is working with the Public Works ministry on proposals to build new motorcycle lanes, particularly for roads that have high accident rates.

“Allotments for the construction of these motorcycle lanes will be requested under the 12th Malaysia Plan through the Ministry of Public Works,” he said in response to a question from A Kesavadas Nair.

It also said that 169,315 Automated Enforcement System (AES) citations totaling RM6,912,300 have been issued from September 1, 2018 to December 31, 2019, since Putrajaya took over radar operations from traffic.

Pakatan Harapan’s Cabinet agreed in August 2018 that the Ministry of Transport and the Department of Road Transport would take over the administration of the chambers of two private companies.
