PETALING JAYA: The Ministry of Health reported 62 new Covid-19 infections today, bringing the total number of cases to 9,459.
The positive cases include six imported cases and 56 local broadcasts, the ministry said today in a Twitter update.
No deaths were recorded, and the death toll stood at 128.
Nine patients were discharged in the last 24 hours, said Chief Health Officer Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah, with total recoveries to date of 9,124.
Noor Hisham said there are currently 207 active cases, six of which are being treated in intensive care units and four are in need of respiratory support.
The six imported cases involved two Malaysians and four foreigners.
These were from Turkey, Bangladesh, Indonesia, and Egypt.
Meanwhile, of the 56 local cases, 30 patients were Malaysians.
Fifty of these cases were from the Benteng Lahad Datu group in Sabah.
Another case reported in Sabah was a severe acute respiratory infection screening, identified at Lahad Datu Hospital.
Three cases were from Kedah, of which two were from the new Sungai group.
Two other cases were reported in the state, one from the exams in the Telaga group and the other from an exam at a dental clinic in Alor Setar.
A case was reported in Penang.
50 cases in the Lahad Datu cluster
Yesterday there were 50 positive cases from Benteng Lahad Datu’s group, which was first identified on September 1. This brought the group’s total number of positive cases to 66.
Thirty of the patients are Malays and 36 are foreigners.
The group started with two undocumented immigrants who were detained at the Lahad Datu district police headquarters on August 24. They were found positive for Covid-19 on August 31 and were admitted to Lahad Datu Hospital.
In seven days, 1,404 people were examined and 66 results were positive. Sixty-four, or 97% of all positive cases, involved inmates, while two cases involved a correctional officer and her close relative.
A total of 631 prisoners, 97 members of prison staff, 157 relatives of prisoners and prison staff, 78 police officers and 440 officers from other government agencies have been examined.
The Health Ministry also reported on a new group from a medical center in Kedah, called the Sungai group.
The index case, Case 9,455, was a health worker at the facility. The patient had been suffering from symptoms since August 30, but did not seek treatment.
The patient tested positive during an exam on Saturday.
The second case, case 9,456, was a close contact of the index patient. The second patient, who is also a member of the center’s staff, had been showing symptoms since Saturday.
Both patients have been admitted to Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital in Alor Setar for isolation and treatment.
As of September 7, 57 people have been tested, two tested positive, and 55 are still awaiting lab results.
