PUTRAJAYA: A total of 600 people were slapped with compounds for violating the recovery motion control order (MCO) rules in pubs and nightclubs on National Day.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said they were among 778 people arrested by police on August 31 for violating standard operating procedures (SOPs).

“This is the highest number of rape cases involving pub and disco activities recorded during the MCO recovery.

“The authorities are concerned about the increase in rape incidents, as these activities are not yet allowed,” it said on Tuesday (September 1).

Of the 778 arrested, 98 people were held in custody, seven were allowed bail and 673 were granted compounds.

Crimes include breach of social distancing, operating outside of business hours, and failing to record customer information.

Police also took action against two people who violated quarantine orders and against 16 people for not wearing masks.

Ismail said that the police had decided to include local authorities during checks and raids on pubs, nightclubs and entertainment centers so that more comprehensive measures could be taken against the facilities.

“The police can only issue compounds or take offenders to court. They do not have the authority to cancel or revoke business licenses, which can be done by local authorities.

“So if local authority officials come, then they can take action that involves business licenses and shut down the facilities,” he said.

The task force that monitors SOP compliance checked 63,125 locations, including places of worship, restaurants, street vendors, wet markets, and hanging out on Monday (Aug 31).
