PETALING JAYA: The Ministry of Health reported six new Covid-19 infections today, bringing the total number of cases to 9,391.
Twenty-one patients were discharged in the last 24 hours, with a total of 9,113 recoveries to date.
Health Director General Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said there are currently 150 active cases, five of which are being treated in the Intensive Care Unit and three require respiratory assistance.
In a statement, it said the six positive cases include four imported cases and two local broadcasts.
While no new conglomerates were reported today, Noor Hisham said there was a new case in the Telaga conglomerate in Kedah, bringing the total number of cases there to nine.
A total of 3,458 people have been tested in this group as of noon today, with 2,744 tests coming back negative and 705 people still awaiting their results.
Today there were no new deaths, and the country’s death toll stood at 128, or 1.36% of all cases.
No vaccine yet, says WHO
Meanwhile, Noor Hisham said that a press conference held yesterday by the World Health Organization (WHO) had confirmed that the world body has yet to recognize a safe and effective vaccine for Covid-19.
Although Russia has already approved a vaccine and patients who participated in the first trials developed antibodies without “serious adverse effects,” the scientists cautioned that the trials were too small (only 76 participants) to demonstrate safety and efficacy.
Noor Hisham also said that the WHO outlined several preventive measures for Covid-19 during yesterday’s press conference that are in line with best practices promoted by the ministry.
“During the same press conference, the WHO said that Malaysia has been recognized for having a strong healthcare system and comprehensive universal health coverage (UHC),” said Noor Hisham.
“It was also recognized that the Malaysian health system has a solid foundation to combat Covid-19. The ministry appreciates this recognition by the WHO and maintains its commitment to improve the health system ”, she added.
