549 arrested for defying MCO

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 549 people were arrested yesterday for defying the Movement Control Order (MCO), said Chief Minister (Security Group) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

Of the total, 547 of them received compound fines, while two more were detained, it said in a statement today.

The crimes were for not wearing masks (188 people), not practicing physical distancing (79), not providing search tools (154), premises operating during the stipulated hours (34), participating in pub and disco activities (nine) and others (85).

In Ops Benteng, Ismail Sabri said that a total of 14 illegal immigrants were arrested, while a boat and six land vehicles were seized as a result of 291 barricades set up yesterday.

Meanwhile, from July 24 to yesterday, 56,699 people have returned to Malaysia and were placed in 65 hotels and 17 other venues, including Public Training Institutions and private higher education institutions nationwide.

“Of the total, 9,523 people underwent mandatory quarantine, while 381 people were sent to hospitals for treatment and 46,795 were allowed to return home,” he said. – Called
