Veveonah Mosibin, a student at Universiti Malaysia Sabah, made headlines earlier this year for sitting in a tree to get a constant internet signal.

PUTRAJAYA: Residents of Kampung Sapatalang in Sabah, the home of college student Veveonah Mosibin, will have 4G services by the middle of next year, according to Malaysia’s Multimedia and Communications Commission.

Veveonah rose to fame recently when she posted a video showing her taking her exams while climbing a tree, due to a lack of internet communications. A deputy minister who accused her of lying and performing a YouTube stunt apologized and withdrew her comments after widespread protests online.

MCMC said that the Kampung Sapatalang tower, Pitas, would be among the projects being carried out by the Jalinan Digital Negara plan to improve communications infrastructure in Sabah from 2020 to 2022.

The plan, called Jendela for short, replaces the National Plan for Fiberization and Connectivity drafted before the Covid-19 pandemic and the resulting increase and changes in internet use, Bernama reported.

“The people of Sabah should benefit the most and the implementation of Jendela will continue to prioritize projects to develop the communications infrastructure in the state,” MCMC said in a statement today.

In the framework of the universal service provision program, the addition of 382 new communication towers and the upgrade of 924 communication transmitters in the existing towers are being planned.

In addition, service providers will commercially modernize 35 new towers and 1,048 communications transmitters to increase 4G coverage, while 251,166 locations will also have access to fiber optics.
