4 men in pretrial detention for impersonating MACC officers, DPP

PUTRAJAYA: Four men were arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for posing as their superior officers and also as assistant prosecutors to solicit bribes, allegedly to help solve the cases the commission investigates.

Three of them, including the mastermind, known as “Dato Roy,” who claimed to be a MACC director, were arrested in an operation at a hotel here at around 4.30pm yesterday.

The fourth suspect was arrested at his home in Melaka at 8:30 pm yesterday.

The four suspects, aged 39 to 54, included a company owner and director. They are in custody for six days until December 22 to facilitate the MACC investigation.

The preventive detention order was issued today by Magisrate Shah Wira Abdul Halim here.

According to a MACC source, the four men were said to solicit a bribe allegedly to change the charge against the complainant in the case to a lesser crime, as well as to lift the freeze on their bank accounts that were frozen by the commission.

“The intelligence results found that members of the group enter the MACC headquarters to take photos of them and convince the victims that they are MACC officials,” said the source, adding that their movement was recorded by the closed circuit camera. television station (CCTV) at MACC headquarters.

The source said MACC has found out the identity of a woman who is a member of the group to assist in the investigation and is tracking her.

MACC intelligence director Datuk Azmi Kamaruzaman, who confirmed the arrest, said the case is being investigated under Section 16 of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act.
