A total of 398 employers in the state have requested to carry out staff reduction and salary reduction exercises that involved 15,597 workers during the execution of the movement control order (MCO) to date.

The chairman of the State Committee for Health and the Environment, R Vidyananthan, said the exercises saw 1,443 workers laid off, while another 180 voluntarily quit their jobs, 2,864 were temporarily laid off and 11,110 workers accepted wage cuts.

Under section 63 of the Employment Act of 1955, employers must notify the relevant authorities of the new recruitment or downsizing by completing the forms provided, it said in a statement today.

He also said that during the MCO, the Johor Department of Labor had established “Skuad Khidmat Cepat” (fast service squad) to handle complaints with the Department of Occupational Safety and Health.

After receiving a complaint, the team would contact the employer to advise them on compliance with the Infectious Disease Control and Prevention Act of 1988 (Law 342).

“If the employer still does not comply with the directive, the task force will summon them to the Labor Department office to make sure they comply with the order.

“If the employer continues to disobey, the special workforce is required to visit the employer’s premises and may also involve the police to enforce Law 342,” he said. Bernama
