GEORGE TOWN: A total of 35 students and 10 teachers who had been in close contact with an infected student at a high school were ordered by the state Health Department to self-quarantine at home. of the principals Datuk Goh Boon Poh said there were no instructions from the authorities to close the school.
“We remain open as usual, and parents and students should not panic as the Department of Health is doing everything possible to contain the spread of Covid-19,” he said yesterday.
Confirming that a student had been infected, Goh said the Health Department conducted a disinfection exercise at the school on Monday.
“They came three times and carried out the operation overnight,” he said.
He added that the school also carried out its own disinfection on the premises.
“Even some of our alumni helped with the disinfection exercise,” he said.
Goh praised the Health Department for its quick response in containing the outbreak at the school.
The infected student is known to be related to the 89-year-old patient who was diagnosed with a severe acute respiratory infection at a private hospital in Penang on Saturday.
The state health director, Dr. Asmayani Khalib, urged the public to always adhere to standard operating procedure.
“To trace positive contacts, the district health department will conduct a risk assessment and issue the necessary advice to those affected,” he said.
Meanwhile, the chairwoman of the Penang health committee, Dr. Norlela Ariffin, was admitted to a private hospital after being diagnosed with pneumonia.
Norlela, who is also the Penanti assembly member, tested negative for Covid-19.
