Two groups of Thais attempted to return home on rat tracks to avoid border checkpoints.

SONGKHLA: Thai authorities have detained 34 Thai citizens, including six children, who tried to avoid undergoing health screenings at the Malaysian-Thai border by riding motorcycles on rat tracks.

In two separate raids, 29 Thais, including six children on 15 motorcycles, were detained in the jungle at Saba Yoi, Songkhla, near the border, and four women and one man arrested and three motorcycles seized from the jungle near Na Thawi, Songkhla.

Saba Yoi’s district officer’s assistant, Ridthachart Thasajajun, said they were all believed to belong to the same group.

“They tried to smuggle Thailand as they did not want to go through health checks at the border checkpoint. Now they must undergo a 14-day quarantine and receive a fine for illegally entering the country, “he said.

Thailand has closed all nine border control points with Malaysia since March 23, as one of the measures to curb the spread of Covid-19 infection.

However, five border checkpoints have been reopened to allow stranded citizens in Malaysia to return to their homes in stages. Only 350 people can enter Thailand daily.
