31 new Covid-19 infections, screening finds sporadic cases in Sabah

COVID-19 | Malaysia has registered 31 new cases of Covid-19 today, of which 28 were locally transmitted cases while three were imported.

The Health Ministry said most of the cases (25) were reported in Sabah, including 17 from Benteng’s LD group that targeted the detention centers in Lahad Datu and Tawau.

Another case was detected in Sabah by contact tracing of patient 9,454, involving the patient’s son.

Five of the other cases in Sabah appeared to be sporadic and were detected by screening for various reasons, including:

  • A case through elderly screening at Merotai Health Clinic, Tawau
  • A case by screening patients with severe acute respiratory infection at Lahad Datu Hospital
  • A preoperative screening case at Queen Hospital, Kudat
  • A case through the selection of references at Tawau Hospital
  • A case through the examination of detainees at the Kudat district police headquarters

Meanwhile, in Negeri Sembilan, four new cases were detected for the Bunga group, which involved members of the crew of a ship docked at Port Dickson.

Only one case was reported today in Kedah, where several areas were blocked under a selective administrative movement control order. The case is attributed to the Sungai Cluster.

The new infections bring the number of cases in the country to 9,946 cases since the beginning of the pandemic. Seven more people have recovered and been discharged today, leaving 615 cases still active.

However, the number of critically ill patients continues to grow with 11 being treated in intensive care units, compared to nine yesterday. Five of them also required assistance from a mechanical ventilator to breathe, compared to four yesterday.

No new deaths were reported today, so the death toll remains at 128.
