Villagers from Kg Bantal in Ulu Tembeling, Pahang, rescuing a flooded Ministry of Health boat.

PETALING JAYA: Health Director General Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah thanked residents of a Pahang village for rescuing three Ministry of Health staff whose boat capsized in a river near Jerantut.

He said that Kg Bantal residents, Ulu Tembeling, came to the aid of the three health workers and saved the capsized boat.

“This is the risk of every front-line health worker serving Malaysians in rural areas,” he said in an online post tonight.

A video clip posted on their Facebook page showed villagers in two boats alongside the ministry boat helping to draw water from the flooded boat.

A villager is heard saying that “the ship’s driver and passengers are safe now, as they have come ashore” and were trying to prevent damage to the ship’s engine.

“We hope this instills the spirit of gotong-royong and friendship,” the man said.

Flood Victims Must Obey Covid Rules

In a separate statement from the Health Ministry, Noor Hisham said that flood victims evacuated to aid centers in Terengganu, Kelantan and Pahang should take care of their own health and follow Covid-19 health and hygiene protocols.

He said congestion at aid centers could increase the risk of disease transmission.

Noor Hisham said that the Rantau Panjang clinic in Kelantan had also been affected by the floods and that its services were now being performed at the Gual Tinggi school.

He said that 49 teams of medical and health personnel from district health offices had been dispatched to relief centers to provide health screening and treatment services.
