Chief Security Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said that the implementation of EMCO will make it easier for the health ministry to conduct tests and ensure there is no infection in the community.

PETALING JAYA: Chief Security Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced today that three areas will be placed under the Enhanced Movement Control Order (EMCO) from December 28 to January 10.

Two will be in Johor and one in Negeri Sembilan.

In a statement today, Ismail said that the Johor Bahru Correctional Center in Pontian and the staff units will be placed under an EMCO.

In addition, all detainees from the Kota Tinggi District Police Headquarters will be located in the Segitiga Room in Taman Desa Sejahtera, Kota Tinggi, which will be locked up.

The decision to impose EMCO came after tests determined that 125 of the 171 inmates at the district police headquarters were positive for Covid-19.

Meanwhile, Jelebu Prison in Negeri Sembilan and its staff units will also be under an EMCO.

Ismail said the Health Ministry had detected eight cases at the Johor Bahru Correctional Center in Pontian from December 16 to 23. All of them were inmates attending trial in other districts.

A total of 685 inmates and facility staff were in close contact with the eight inmates.

Ismail said EMCO in the area involved 937 inmates, 322 staff members and 128 of their family members who lived in the 102 staff quarters.

As of December 22, the Health Ministry had tested 1,086 people in Jelebu Prison and its staff quarters, with 305 inmates and two guards testing positive.

“The implementation of EMCO will make it easier for the health ministry to screen all inmates, staff and close contacts involved to ensure that there is no infection in the community,” Ismail said.

He also announced that the EMCO at the Persiaran Paya Terubong flats in Relau, Penang, would conclude today.

Announced on December 7, the EMCO in the area was originally scheduled to end on December 31.

Ismail said that the Health Ministry had completed testing for Covid-19 in the area, and positive cases are now trending downward.

In total, 113 of the 5,585 apartment residents tested positive.

Meanwhile, Ismail said police arrested 456 people yesterday for crimes related to movement control.

He said 421 of them were fined, 34 in pretrial detention and one released on bail.

Most of the crimes, he said, were for participating in activities in nightclubs and pubs (170).

Other crimes include participating in activities that make physical distancing difficult (167), not providing materials for tracking or recording contacts (67) and not wearing face masks (45).

Meanwhile, a total of 2,349 compliance work teams were deployed to carry out controls in 15,226 supermarkets, restaurants, street vendors, factories, banks, government offices, as well as land, water and air transportation terminals.

Authorities also detained 57 undocumented immigrants as part of the ongoing Op Benteng campaign.

They also seized three vehicles.

On mandatory home quarantine, Ismail said 93,070 people who arrived via KLIA were screened for Covid-19 from July 24 to December 26 and were quarantined.

Some 536 tested positive and were sent to hospital for treatment, while 85,409 were allowed to return home.

Some 7,125 people are in mandatory quarantine.
