PETALING JAYA: Police yesterday arrested 253 people, including 116 in pubs and nightclubs, for various crimes under the Recovery Motion Control Order (RMCO).
The Chief Minister of Security, Ismail Sabri Yaakob, said that yesterday 219 people were handed over compounds, 32 were in pretrial detention and two received bail.
Other crimes include participating in activities that make physical distancing difficult (70), not wearing masks (26) and not registering the personal data of the guests (23).
It also said that 5,170 workforce teams involving 17,765 people carried out checks in 3,579 supermarkets, 4,805 restaurants, 1,182 street vendors and 1,052 factories.
1,082 land transport terminals, 211 water transport terminals and 75 air transport terminals were also monitored.
Ismail said police installed 63 barricades across the country and inspected 27,197 vehicles to prevent illegal immigrants from entering the country, warning that the government would take action against anyone who tries to enter the country illegally.
Meanwhile, 20,455 people arrived through the country’s entry points from July 24 until yesterday, and were sent to 73 quarantine facilities.
The police also carried out 220 checks yesterday on those who underwent mandatory home quarantine.
Ismail reminded the public to be vigilant about the Covid-19 threat as he celebrates the country’s 63rd Merdeka Day today.
“Although this year’s celebration is being conducted in moderation and with new rules because the country is not yet completely free from the threat of the Covid-19 pandemic, each of us is free to express our patriotism,” he said in a statement.
“In the joy of celebrating it, let’s not forget that we are not free from Covid-19 yet.”
