243 arrested for disobeying movement restrictions

KUALA LUMPUR: Police arrested 243 people yesterday for disobeying standard operating procedures under the movement restriction order, Chief Security Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said today.

Ismail said 217 of them were imposed compound fines, while another 26 were sent to pretrial detention.

In a statement, he said that most of the crimes were due to people not wearing face masks.

Other offenses included failing to observe physical distancing, failing to provide materials for the contact tracing record, and traveling between states or between districts without a permit.

A total of 2,873 compliance work teams were deployed to carry out controls in 17,071 supermarkets, restaurants, street vendors, factories, banks, government offices, as well as land, water and air transportation terminals.

Ismail also said the police captured 32 illegal immigrants and two smugglers, as well as detained 10 vehicles yesterday under Ops Benteng.

He added that 75,212 people had come through the KLIA between July 24 and November 25 from various countries.

A total of 405 people tested positive and were sent to the hospital for treatment, while 64,096 were able to return home.

It added that 10,711 people are currently in mandatory quarantine.
