First introduced in Japan in May, the fourth-generation Mazda 3 has received a number of minor updates in its local market, bringing more power and improvements in driving dynamics and active safety.
Let’s start with the engine upgrades, including the clever 2.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline Skyactiv-X that combines positive and compression ignition for improved fuel economy and reduced emissions. Adjustments to the spark plug controlled combustion ignition (SPCCI) process have released an additional 10 PS and 16 Nm, bringing outputs to 190 PS at 6,000 rpm and 240 Nm of torque at 4,500 rpm.
The supercharger, which tips the fuel-air mixture at higher revs, also responds more quickly to harsh acceleration so the engine feels more nimble. Models equipped with this engine are now called e-Skyactiv X and come with a dedicated badge on the front fenders and the tailgate.
The 1.8-liter Skyactiv-D turbodiesel has also been updated, now with a wider torque band and increased throttle response. There is also a 14 PS increase in power to 130 PS at 4,000 rpm, although the actual torque figure remains at 270 Nm from 1,600 to 2,600 rpm. Purists can also rejoice that the Skyactiv-G 2.0-liter petrol mill has a new six-speed manual gearbox option, complementing the standard automatic.
Other changes include re-tuned springs and dampers to smooth suspension movement, reduce vibration, and improve ride and handling. In terms of safety, the Cruising & Traffic Support (CTS) level 2 semi-autonomous driving function now works at highway speeds, above the 55 km / h limit from before. Adaptive cruise control also responds more smoothly to better mimic a human driver.
The Mazda 3 update also introduces a new limited edition model that celebrates two milestones at once. As such, it is referred to quite succinctly as the “2020 Special Automobile Design Award Commemorative Model of the Year 2020 (WCDOTY) of the 100th Anniversary Special Commemorative Car” (no, we are no jokes).
As the rather descriptive nomenclature suggests, it honors the style gong bestowed on the car and features all the trimmings from the 100th anniversary special unveiled earlier this year. However, the WCDOTY version receives Soul Red Crystal Metallic paint instead of Snowflake White Pearl Mica, in addition to a commemorative ornament given to owner upon delivery.
