BEST: Black Cougars
The Black Pumas achieved a practically flawless rendition of their Grammy-nominated single “Colors.” From Eric Burton’s vocals and impressive dance moves to Adrian Quesada’s shattered guitar, they got him out of the park!
BEST: DaBaby with Roddy Ricch, Anthony Hamilton and Mapy
DaBaby delivered a cover of their hit “Rockstar” that was unlike anything we’ve heard before! Accompanied by Roddy Ricch, Anthony Hamilton, violinist Mapy, and backing singers dressed in choir robes, whom host Trevor Noah amusingly referred to as “DaBaby Boomers,” the rapper put on the kind of unexpected performance that we can only hope for during the Grammy.
THE WORST: Bad Bunny and Jhay Cortez
Bad Bunny and Jhay Cortez were disappointed with a low-energy rendition of their hit collaboration “Dakiti.” The duo somehow seemed out of sync as they bounced through a tunnel of lamp posts, which was later revealed to be in the shape of an eyeball. Unfortunately, something seemed to be missing. Host Trevor Noah said the performance left him feeling like he was back at the club, but we felt like we were exactly where we were. were … On the couch in front of the TV.
BEST: Dua Lipa with DaBaby
Dua Lipa wore it during the 2021 Grammys! Her performance had it all: a medley of two of our favorite songs (“Levitating” and “Don’t Start Now”), killer dance moves, multiple costume changes (started with a voluminous long-sleeved ball gown, se switched to a ravishing jacket -inspired minidress and then closed his set in sequined briefs and a matching crop-top) and a help from collaborator DaBaby, who returned to the stage to rap his verse to “Levitating” while surrounded by dancers from backing dressed in pink.
BEST: Taylor Swift
Like something out of a dream! Taylor Swift’s voice was on point as she delivered an emotional rendition of her ethereal single “Cardigan” while reclining on what at first appeared to be grass, but it was soon revealed to be the moss-covered roof of a cabin in the woods. He then went downstairs to join Jack Antonoff inside the cabin, where they played guitar while singing his song “August.” After that, they stood on the grass, now glowing with twinkling lights, to perform “Willow.”
BEST: Silk Sonic
Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak made their official debut as Silk Sonic during the 2021 Grammy Awards. The new supergroup, accompanied by two backup singers, transported us back to the 1970s with a poignant performance of their wonderful debut single “Leave the Door Open. “. The Grammy winners sported matching outfits with flared pants and drapes while showing off their enviable dance moves and vocal chops. Later in the show, they performed two of Little Richard’s biggest hits during the “In Memoriam” segment of the Grammys. Bruno showed his impressive range by taking lead vocals on “Long Tall Sally” and “Good Golly, Miss Molly” while Anderson played the drums.
WORST: Lionel Richie
Lionel Richie was clearly feeling extremely excited as he honored his late friend Kenny Rogers during the “In Memoriam” segment of the Grammys. Sadly, that left his voice lacking during his performance of his friend “Lady’s” hit.
BEST: Brandi Carlile
Brandi Carlile brought us to tears by delivering a low-key but beautiful rendition of the late John Prine’s hit “I Remember Everything” during the “In Memoriam” segment of the Grammys.
BEST: Brittany Howard with Chris Martin
Brittany Howard closed the “In Memoriam” segment of the Grammys with a cover of “I’ll Never Walk Alone” from the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical “Carousel.” The performance featured an unexpected guest: Coldplay frontman Chris Martin accompanied the Alabama Shakes singer on piano. His surprise appearance really raised the number!
BEST: Mickey Guyton
Mickey Guyton delivered a powerful rendition of his hit “Black Like Me” that included an unexpected addition: a chorus that really took the performance to the next level!
WORST: Miranda Lambert
Nap! Miranda Lambert disappointed during the 2021 Grammy Awards with a downright boring rendition of “Bluebird” that included some awkward dance moves and a not especially strong voice from the queen of country music. We loved the flower-adorned platform she acted from, at least!
WORST: Maren Morris with John Mayer
Not even an assist from John Mayer on guitar and backing vocals could save Maren Morris’s low-energy rendition of her hit single “The Bones.” (Could you even hear it?) Like country music queen Miranda Lambert, Maren’s voice was weaker than we expect to hear from her. Overall, it felt like a wasted opportunity.
BEST: Megan Thee Stallion
A real entertainer! Megan Thee Stallion delivered an unforgettable mix of two of her biggest hits during the 2021 Grammys. It began with “Bodysuit,” during which she showcased her impressive dance moves in a sequined gown, which she wore with a chorus girl-inspired feather headdress. . After a costume change (to another sequined bodysuit), she took on her smash hit “Savage,” which featured many high kicks, as well as backup tap-dance artists.
BEST: Cardi B with Megan Thee Stallion
Cardi B also delivered an impressive, high-energy performance during the 2021 Grammys. She began with her new single “Up” and then joined Megan Thee Stallion on stage for a rendition of her hit collaboration “WAP.” The performance had it all: cool costumes that had both rappers looking like futuristic female warriors, amazing backup dancers (did you see the dancer in full blue body paint?), Eye-catching background graphics, and massive scenes. That giant shoe with a pole for a heel and a ballerina with dollar bills on the platform? We are obsessed!
WORST: Post Malone
Well that was weird. Post Malone channeled Blade during his rendition of “Hollywood’s Bleeding,” the opening song to his 2019 album of the same name. The performance got off to a strong start, with a chorus of vampires surrounding the chart-topping leader of “Sunflower” as he sang in the dark, smoke swirling around him as lights flashed overhead like lightning. Unfortunately, the song didn’t seem to match the rest of the vibe, leaving us a bit confused and wanting more.
BEST: Lil Baby with Killer Mike, Kendrick Sampson and Tamika Mallory
Woof. Lil Baby delivered arguably the biggest performance at the 2021 Grammy Awards. His portrayal of “The Bigger Picture” began with “Insecure” and “How to Get Away with Murder,” actor Kendrick Sampson portraying a man who fell asleep while Steering wheel of a car in the parking lot of a fast food restaurant and then shot dead by police, a tragic scene referencing the 2020 murder of another unarmed black man, Rayshard Brooks, outside Wendy’s in Atlanta. As the song progressed, a protester set fire to the fake restaurant. Lil Baby’s heartbeat continued as activist Tamika Mallory delivered a poignant and poetic speech addressing President Joe Biden directly from the steps of the Los Angeles Convention Center. Killer Mike then blurted out a verse while surrounded by microphones, like he was at a press conference. After that, Lil Baby joined flare-wielding dancers as part of a protest that saw them confront performers dressed as policemen. The rapper concluded his outdoor performance by hopping into the same car from the start of the number as fireworks erupted overhead.
BEST: Doja Cat
The best moves of the night? Doja Cat! His dancing keeps getting better over time. (Yes, we caught her doing the robot!) The singer showed off her impressive moves in a futuristic costume as she performed her hit “Say So” as she was joined by equally skilled backup dancers with oversized cat heads. Meow!
BEST: BTS
BTS proved that when you have pure talent, you don’t need much more to keep people entertained! Their virtual rendition of “Dynamite” featured loud vocals, flawless choreography, and just a hint of pyrotechnics as the boys traveled to different locations throughout a building in Seoul, South Korea, and finally concluded on the roof. Epic!
BEST: Roddy Ricch
Roddy Ricch opened his performance with the debut of his new song “Heartless”, which he sang while playing the piano and accompanied by a harpist. It was totally unexpected and we loved every second of it! He then launched into a rendition of his hit single “The Box,” which struck in front of a giant fallen statue lit from within.
