2020 Proton X50 Variant Breakdown: Spec Differences Between Standard, Executive, Premium, and Flagship

[ad_1]

So, finally, the Proton X50. You have read our media preview report to get all the details and everything you need to know about the new Proton SUV, now here is a breakdown of the four available variants: 1.5T Standard, 1.5T Executive, 1.5T Premium and 1.5T. TGDi’s flagship. Yes, the rank topper is called Flagship.

Before we get into the specs in time, here’s a rundown of the long-awaited new SUV. If the Proton X70 is based on the Geely Boyue, its younger brother here is based on the Geely Binyue, also known as Geely Coolray in some markets.

There is not a big difference between the Binyue and the X50 in terms of design; Aside from the conversion from the left-hand drive to our right-hand drive format, Geely’s “expanding cosmos” grille has been replaced by Proton’s “Infinite Weave” grille, which is rendered in glossy black and houses Proton’s new round logo. There is a red pinstripe that “cradles” all of the above.

The “cageless” tiger insignia, revealed in September 2019, is also found on the wheels and steering wheel. The rear has the Proton inscription on the chrome tailgate garnish, while the text “Proton Full LED” can be seen on the side of the LED headlights, which are standard across the board along with quad tailpipes, which are real.

Inside, the speaker grilles feature the Infinite Weave motif. Geely’s repeating G pattern can still be found in the smallest places, almost like an Easter egg.

In terms of size, the X50 is obviously smaller than the X70, and the figures confirm this. At 4,330mm long, 1,800mm wide and 1,609mm high, the X50 is 139mm shorter, 31mm narrower and 85mm lower than its bigger brother. Its 2,600mm wheelbase is 70mm shorter than the X70.

When it comes to B-segment SUVs, the X50 is 4mm shorter, 10mm wider and 4mm taller than the Honda HR-V, with a 10mm shorter wheelbase. In other words, they are roughly the same size, although this won’t be obvious when you see the X50 on metal.

Four variants will be available and the X50 range will have two engines. The flagship 1.5 TGDi is powered by a 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine developed by Geely and Volvo. This direct injection unit generates 177 hp at 5,500 rpm and 255 Nm of torque from 1,500 to 4,000 rpm.

In the Standard, Executive and Premium variants, the “1.5T” engine is a version of the port-injected engine, which we are seeing for the first time anywhere. Unique in Malaysia and the X50 for now, this unit puts out around 150 PS & 226 Nm. All X50s have a seven-speed wet dual-clutch transmission that sends power to the front wheels; like the CKD X70, there is no all-wheel drive here.

Like the Binyue, the X50 is based on Geely’s B-segment Modular Architecture (BMA) and features MacPherson strut suspension at the front and a torsion beam at the rear. Proton says that the X50, which will come out of its Tanjung Malim plant, has 406 unique parts compared to the Geely LHD, and that the local content is 40%. Around 70 local suppliers are involved in this project, and Proton is looking to purchase RM2 billion pieces per year.

Now, let’s take a closer look at the four variants on offer and the differences in specs. Please note, however, that the full spec sheet is not yet available and Proton has only shown us the 1.5 TGDI Flagship variant so far. All images here are from the topper.
