KUALA LUMPUR: Sungai Emas Apartments in Kuala Langat and Hentian Kajang Plaza in Hulu Langat will be closed from October 28 to November 10, Chief Security Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said today.

The two towns in Selangor have seen an outbreak of Covid-19 cases, with Sungai Emas flats reporting 42 positive cases and Hentian Kajang Plaza reporting 63 cases.

Ismail also announced the closure of Kampung Haji Baki in Kuching after 27 positive cases were detected.

A total of 845 screenings were held in the village of Kuching. The EMCO will affect 4,191 residents living in 532 houses.

Meanwhile, 1,044 screenings were held on the Sungai Emas floor. The closure will involve 1,300 residents living in seven apartment blocks and townhouses.

Ismail added that 909 people were examined at Hentian Square. The EMCO will affect 7,500 inhabitants.

Ismail said the decisions were made on the advice of the Health Ministry.

Under EMCO, all movements are restricted and food will be supplied to residents through the state’s Disaster Operations Control Centers.

The economic sectors are not allowed, nor all sports, recreational, social and cultural activities.

Meanwhile, Ismail also announced an EMCO extension to the Penang Pretrial Prison and Staff Rooms, which was scheduled to end tomorrow.

He said that as of October 26, 4,196 samples had been tested and there were still new positive cases of Covid-19 among inmates and prison staff.

“Therefore, following the advice of the Penang MKN department, the government agreed to extend the EMCO in pretrial detention and prison barracks in Penang State for another 14 days from October 29 to November 11.” .

During a question and answer session, Ismail also said that Batu Sapi’s by-elections would continue despite an increase in cases.

He added that it is not for the government to decide to stop or delay the holding of elections.

He added that the Election Commission would propose stricter standard operating procedures this week.

By-elections for the parliamentary seat will be held after the death of his deputy Liew Vui Keong on October 2.

Ismail also said 612 people were arrested yesterday by police for violating the ongoing recovery MCO. A total of 604 of them were fined and eight in preventive detention.

Most of them were captured for not wearing face masks (156), disobeying the rules of physical distancing (145), not registering the personal data of clients (134) and activities in entertainment centers (96).

Authorities also detained 56 undocumented immigrants yesterday as part of border control operations. They also confiscated three land vehicles.
