2 immigration officers charged with accepting RM154,000 in bribes

KOTA BHARU: Two officers from the Immigration Department were indicted in Session Court here today with 33 counts of accepting bribes in the amount of RM154,340.

The first defendant, Mohamad Hariss Rosli, 27, who was charged with 31 counts of accepting bribes, pleaded guilty to 18 counts and sought trial on the remaining 13 counts.

The second defendant, Fasmawi Ab Wahab, 24, pleaded guilty to two counts against him.

Hariss, who is attached to the Johor Immigration Department, was charged with 31 counts of obtaining RM152,940 from various individuals.

He is alleged to have committed the crimes at an Islamic Maybank branch here between April 2018 and November 2019.

The charges were framed in Section 165 of the Penal Code, which establishes a prison sentence of up to two years or a fine, or both, after conviction.

Fasmawi, who is also attached to the Johor Immigration Department, was charged with two counts of obtaining RM1,400 from an individual at the Maybank Islamic Bhd branch at Jalan Hulu Pasar in Tumpat, between February 26 and March 1 of 2019.

Judge Zaman Mohd Noor did not allow bail for the defendant and set the sentence on December 22.

Deputy Prosecutor Norhamizah Ghazali appeared for the indictment while the defendants were not represented.
