Alex Rins opened his 2020 podium account in the eighth round of the 2020 MotoGP World Championship with a cargo trip to third from 13th on the Catalonian MotoGP grid.
Regarded as a pre-season title contender, however, it has been a difficult season for the Suzuki rider following a painful shoulder dislocation during the first round of the season at Jerez.
Although he came close to victory in Austria, only to fall moments after taking the lead, it would take until this weekend for him to rediscover the form that led him to two wins in 2019.
His first podium since Silverstone 2019, Rins had to work hard to make it from 13th on the grid, but he would finish only slightly below his teammate Joan Mir, thus becoming the thirteenth different driver to step on the grandstand in 2020. .
“It feels great to be back here for the first time since Silverstone, I’ve been trying to fight for the podium and in the end we made it.
“Everyone knows that I dislocated my shoulder and after Jerez and Brno I was thinking, I feel 100% because I do not feel pain in the bone, so for my body and mind, it was difficult to understand why I could not run faster .
“But I want to thank my team because they gave me the motivation to be there and fight. It’s not easy, this 2020 season is going up and down.
“The first player you want to beat is your teammate, so I’m trying to go hard and beat him, he’s having a good season, so let’s see.”
The result marks the first time that two Suzuki riders have been on the podium in the same race as in 2007, when John Hopkins and Chris Vermeulen finished second and third at Misano.
