The Minister of the Prime Minister’s Department (Parliament and Law), Takiyuddin Hassan, said that the EC had engaged with various stakeholders to lower the voting age.

KUALA LUMPUR: The implementation of the 18-year voting age and automatic voter registration are expected to start no later than July next year, said Prime Minister (Parliament and Law) Department Minister Takiyuddin Hassan.

He said the Electoral Commission (EC) was currently working with the National Registration Department to make preparations to implement automatic voter registration and other related matters.

“All preparations are expected to be completed within 18 to 24 months from the date of approval by the Senate on July 25 last year,” he said today in a written response in the Dewan Rakyat.

He was responding to a question from Lim Lip Eng (PH-Kepong) about the date the government would implement automatic voter registration and voting at age 18.

Takiyuddin added that the EC had been working on the amendments to the Elections (Voter Registration) Regulations 2002 and other relevant laws, preparing the standard operating procedures, system and infrastructure for this purpose.

“EC held several participation sessions with government departments and agencies, political parties of the opposition and the government bloc, and non-governmental organizations, as well as with the political parties of Sarawak and Sabah,” he added.

He said that the EC had informed other parties about the planning and implementation of the amendments to the law, as well as obtaining their comments and opinions.
