18 detained in investigation into shooting at Malaysia-Thailand border

KANGAR: Eighteen men have been sent to pre-trial detention to facilitate investigations into the shooting between members of the General Operations Force (GOF) and a group of smugglers on the Malaysian-Thai border near Padang Besar, Perlis yesterday.

They comprise three Thais who have been in pre-trial detention for seven days until December 1 and 15 Malaysians who have been in pre-trial detention for four days until Saturday.

The pretrial detention order for the men, aged 19 to 37, was issued by the assistant clerk of the Kangar Magistrates Court, Monica Joseph Gaisah.

GOF member Corporal Baharuddin Ramli, 54, was killed and his colleague, Corporal Norihan Tari, 39, was seriously injured in the incident that took place about 600 meters from the TS9 border wall checkpoint in Padang Kiss.

Baharuddin died on the spot, and Norihan is being treated at Tuanku Fauziah Hospital here.

Perlis Police Chief Surina Saad said the 18 men were arrested three hours after the incident.
