PETALING JAYA: It was a triple blow for Malaysia when it comes to Covid-19, as yesterday the nation recorded triple-digit cases, three new deaths, and a new cluster.

A total of 147 new cases were registered, of which 143 were transmitted locally and four were imported, said the director general of the Ministry of Health, Tan Sri Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah (Photo).

Of the 147 new cases, Sabah, which now has eight active clusters, had the highest number of cases at 134; with 110 infections among Malays and 24 among non-citizens.

In addition to Sabah, Kedah registered five local cases and Selangor two, while Kelantan and Kuala Lumpur had one case each.

Meanwhile, the four imported cases involved infections that occurred overseas in India and Indonesia, said Dr. Noor Hisham.

“There were three deaths yesterday, bringing the death toll to 133, or 1.27% of the total number of cases,” Dr. Noor Hisham said in a press release yesterday.

The 131st death was a 48-year-old Indonesian woman with a history of diabetes and hypertension, the 132nd death was of a 54-year-old Malaysian man, and the 133rd death was also a 72-year-old Malaysian man with a history of stroke.

Dr Noor Hisham also said that 39 patients had recovered, and Malaysia had a total of 9,602 recoveries or 91.40% since the Covid-19 outbreak began.

There are currently 770 active cases in treatment in health facilities in the country, with eight patients in intensive care units (ICU) and two of them required respiratory assistance.

It also revealed that another Covid-19 cluster has also emerged off the east coast of Sabah, this time dubbed the Udin Cluster in Tawau, making it the eighth active cluster in the state currently.

The index case was a 72-year-old woman who tested positive after a screening test for the elderly at the Merotai health clinic on September 12.

“After that, contact tracing was carried out and two more cases of Covid-19 were detected on Tuesday.

“Both positive cases involve Filipinos. They are asymptomatic and have been admitted to the Tawau hospital for treatment, ”he said.

A total of 128 individuals were tested in this group, of which three were positive, 71 were negative, and a further 54 individuals were awaiting test results.

Of the 134 total cases reported in Sabah on Wednesday (September 23), 105 were from the Benteng Lahad Datu group.

Eight new cases were also reported for the Bangau-Bangau group and the Laut group, both in Semporna.

“Meanwhile, the Pulau Cluster in Kunak registered two new cases,” he added.

Outside of Sabah, in Kedah, Sungai Cluster recorded four new cases.
