Umno President Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said he respected the views of the divisional leaders.

BAGAN DATUK: Almost three-quarters of Umno’s 191 divisions have told party leaders that they do not want to cooperate with PPBM for the next general election.

Umno President Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said he respected the views of the 143 divisions and had called a meeting of the Supreme Council on Wednesday to discuss the matter.

Feedback on the need for cooperation with PPBM for the 15th general election came through a WhatsApp chat group, comprising all division heads, he said, after officiating at the Bagan Datuk division meeting today. Um no.

“As president, I respect the decision of the 143 leaders (of the division),” he said. The motions will be examined and must be accepted by the leadership of Umno as they represent the voices of the grassroots.

Zahid added that the decision not to cooperate with PPBM should be accepted as an official party decision, although Umno MPs have promised parliamentary support for the Perikatan Nasional government. The government is led by the president of PPBM, Muhyiddin Yassin.

Zahid said he understood that there were certain sectors that spoke about their discontent after being told that they were “grateful” for having been invited to join the PN government.

He questioned this notion, adding that Umno is the largest contributor to the formation of the federal administration.

“There is currently a movement to establish 8,000 new branches (for a party under the PN). Where can you find the members? Does this mean that Umno members can be ‘bought’ cheaply? Zahid questioned.

He added: “We are not easy to persuade and bribe. The members of Umno are hardy. If we can survive for 22 months (as an opposition), what else in the next few months ”.

The comment about the 8,000 branches is believed to have been directed against PPBM general secretary Hamzah Zainudin. Hamzah recently said that PPBM is targeting one million members and will establish 8,000 branches in Malaysia.

Zahid also urged the government to call elections soon, with all SOPs in place.

“We agreed that the Covid-19 pandemic should be avoided and standard operating procedures should be practiced. But why is (the government) afraid of the elections?

“There are more than 30 countries that have held their elections during the pandemic, but I think they (the Malaysian government leaders) are afraid of something else,” he added.
