1,300 immigration detainees test positive for Covid-19

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 1,355 detainees in immigration warehouses have tested positive for Covid-19 since May, Deputy Interior Minister Ismail Mohamed Said al Dewan Rakyat said.

He said the highest number of infections, 650, was recorded at the Bukit Jalil detention center, followed by the Langkap immigration depot with 481.

Dr. Lee Boon Chye (PH-Gopeng) had asked the ministry to indicate the number of Covid-19 patients from immigration warehouses and prisons.

Ismail said 127 people at the Semenyih immigration center and another 77 at KLIA tested positive for the virus.

The remaining 20 cases were recorded in other deposits in Belantik, Putrajaya, Machap Umboo, Lenggeng and Juru.

He also said that, according to statistics from the Department of Prisons, 60,583 detainees had undergone Covid-19 swab testing since August.

Opposition MPs had called for prison reforms in the past, noting that the third wave of the pandemic in Malaysia began in detention centers.
