JOHOR BAHRU: The Magistrates Court today issued a seven-day preventive detention order for 13 people, nine of whom are believed to be Immigration Department personnel, to facilitate the investigation into the falsification of the country’s border seal.

The other four people are civilians suspected of having acted as agents in the crime to obtain the stamp for foreigners.

Deputy Secretary Mohammad Salehuddin Abd Sani issued the pretrial detention order for the 13 people until November 23 after allowing a request from the Director of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Prosecutor’s Office, Mahadi Abd. Jumaat.

A MACC source said that Immigration Department staff allegedly received bribes of between RM100 and RM500 for each stamped passport from 2017 until this year.

The Immigration Department staff were represented by attorney S. Bharathi, while the four civilians were represented by attorneys Noordin Hussein, Baharudin Baharim and Amarpreet Singh.

The 13 people, between 35 and 45 years old, were taken to court in a bus.Called
