PETALING JAYA: The Ministry of Health reported 1,210 new cases of Covid-19 today, 518 of them in the Klang Valley and 499 in Sabah.
The Klang Valley cases comprised 271 in Selangor, 245 in Kuala Lumpur, and two in Putrajaya.
The number of new infections in Malaysia has exceeded 1,000 for the fifth day in a row.
In a statement, Chief Health Officer Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah said the 1,210 cases brought the total number of infections in the country to 49,730.
Noor Hisham said there were 1,018 recoveries, bringing the total number of discharged to 36,624.
Five deaths were also reported, bringing the death toll to 318.
The five deaths recorded today involve four people from Sabah and one in Perak, aged 25 to 80. Except for one woman in Sabah, all suffered from chronic illnesses.
Most of the new cases in Sabah came from existing clusters, with 112 infections detected in the new Avenue and Kejora clusters in Penampang and Kota Kinabalu, respectively.
Most of the infections in the Klang Valley, or 206 cases, came from the Damanlela cluster of construction sites in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur. Another 131 cases were detected from the Teratai cluster in Selangor.
The other new cases reported today were in Negeri Sembilan (67), Perak (47), Penang (33), Kelantan (19), Johor (14), Kedah (8), Melaka (2), Labuan (1), Terengganu (1) and Sarawak (1).
Perlis and Pahang were the only states that did not register any new Covid-19 infections today.
Noor Hisham said there are currently 12,788 active cases, with 105 patients receiving intensive care, 40 of whom require respiratory support.
There were 172 cases of prison groups today, 122 of which were from the Sandakan group of prisons in Sabah.
Nineteen infections were imported cases, involving five Malaysians and 14 foreigners who entered the country from Nepal, Qatar, India, the Philippines, Nigeria, the United States, Turkey, Russia, Tunisia, Romania and Myanmar.
