12 things you need to know before you buy

[ad_1]

Finally, Finally. The delayed iPhone 12 was released and, as expected, Apple is diversifying its current line of iPhones with a newer, smaller model, while the 2020 high-end iPhone continues under the nickname “Pro Max.”

IPhones, of course, are highly anticipated for many things, chief of which is the fact that it is … well, an iPhone. Regardless of your reasoning, if you are thinking of buying an iPhone 12 when you see a launch in Malaysia, hold your horses.

First, here are the top 12 things you need to know.

1. No high refresh rate displays in 2020

This was a rumor that has unfortunately been proven to be true. IPhone 12 series only It features 60Hz refresh rate displays across the board, including the top-end iPhone 12 Pro Max. Most Android smartphones, of course, already feature 90Hz or even 120Hz refresh rate displays, usually at much more affordable prices.

Rumors They suggest it might have something to do with battery life as the iPhone 12 series also supports power-hungry 5G connectivity. Still, if Android phone makers could do it …

2. 5G across the board, but only below 6 GHz

5G is not even available in Malaysia, and we may not even see next-gen networks even after the iPhone 13 / 12s. Apple clearly has the future in mind though, with 5G support across the board for the iPhone 12 series, including the iPhone 12 Mini. Additionally, Bluetooth 5.0 is supported, along with WiFi 6 (802.11ax).

However, there is something to keep in mind regarding the 5G capabilities of the iPhone 12 series. In Malaysia, the new iPhone models only Supports Sub-6GHz bands, not mmWave 5G. For some contexts, mmWave 5G offers faster theoretical speeds, although Sub-6GHz 5G frequencies can penetrate more using fewer network towers.

As far as we know, mmWave support is limited to the US market.

3. A completely new model: the iPhone 12 Mini

The iPhone SE 2020 aside, the new base model in the current iPhone series is the iPhone 12 Mini. This means that there are four current iPhone 12 models: iPhone 12 Mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max.

The best news? The entry-level iPhone 12 Mini uses the Super Retina XDR display, which uses an OLED panel with HDR. This is particularly noteworthy, given that the iPhone 11 missed OLED displays last year.

4. MagSafe… for iPhone?

For those of you who have used older MacBooks, you will remember this. MagSafe was Apple’s proprietary charging head technology, where the charging head was magnetically attached to your laptop during charging.

Now Apple offers MagSafe wireless charging on the iPhone 12 series. Basically, a wireless charger will snap and align in place via magnets to ensure a perfect location while charging, just like Apple Watch chargers work. Apple also promises that additional accessories will work alongside MagSafe, including an official armored wallet case for the iPhone 12.

5. FaceTime in 1080p, finally

The entire iPhone 12 series now supports 1080p FaceTime calling. As the world relies on video calling more than ever, Apple has finally taken calls to upgrade the resolution of its native video calling app to Full HD. However, you will only be able to make 1080p FaceTime calls over 5G or WiFi.

6. A14 Bionic – the first commercially available 5nm chip on the market

First seen on the new iPad Air, the iPhone 12 series runs on the Apple 14 Bionic chipset, with a 6-core CPU, a 4-core GPU, and a 16-core Neural Engine. According to Apple, this is the first commercially available 5nm chip on the market, with 3 billion more transistors than its predecessor, the A13.

This should also be reflected in improved raw performance, and with the A14 used across the board (including the iPhone 12 Mini), you can expect to run the latest mobile games and power-hungry apps without a hitch.

7. LiDAR sensors on the iPhone 12 Pro (and 12 Pro Max)

Another thing that has been brought over from an iPad (Pro, this time) is the LiDAR sensor on the iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max. This will have applications in augmented reality (AR), with detailed AR depth mapping enhanced with the new sensor. Plus, the LiDAR sensor offers faster autofocus on the iPhone 12; Apple promises six times the autofocus speed in low-light environments.

8. 4x-5x optical zoom … but not really

Apple talked about the zoom capabilities of the iPhone 12 Pro during the keynote address, stating that the 4x – 5x optical zoom range was compatible with telephoto cameras. However, it is worth noting that Apple takes into account the ultra-wide angle, focus outside camera when calculating this. You actually get a 2.5x optical zoom on the iPhone 12 Pro Max and a 2x optical zoom on the smaller iPhone 12 Pro.

9. Nope. There are no chargers here

Do you have a lot of electric bricks at home? Yes? Then this is for you. Apple has confirmed that the new iPhone 12 series will ship without a charger, or even without EarPods. This is supposedly part of the company’s sustainability effort to reduce carbon emissions through its products, although you still get a USB-C to Lightning cable out of the box.

Of course, there is no 3.5mm headphone jack so you will have to buy a pair of AirPods as well, makes sense right?

10. The largest iPhone screen ever

Something you may have missed is that the iPhone 12 Pro Max has the largest screen ever seen on an iPhone. Both Pro models now have larger screens compared to their predecessors, with the iPhone 12 Pro Max having a 6.7 “screen and the smaller Pro model with a 6.1” screen.

Meanwhile, the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max use Super Retina XDR displays with OLED panels, and Apple promises a 2,000,000: 1 contrast ratio and 1,200 nits maximum brightness for HDR.

11. Dolby Vision HDR Video Recording on iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max

According to Apple, the iPhone 12 Pro (and Pro Max) are the first smartphones that allow users to capture, edit, watch, and share Dolby Vision content on a single device. Dolby Vision HDR video recording supports 4K at 60fps, although 8K video recording is not yet available on an iPhone.

12. Apple ProRAW is not yet available

One of the coolest things about the iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max is a new photo format: Apple ProRAW. This will basically offer users the flexibility of RAW images, along with Apple’s computational image processing capabilities. However, ProRAW is not available at launch and will likely ship to the iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max via an OTA software update.
