12 suspects caught in a raid on illegal 4D bookmakers

PETALING JAYA: It was not a win for the illegal lottery bookmakers busy taking bets from punters for Saturday’s 4D draw here when the police launched an all-out bombardment against them.

The raids, which began at 3 p.m. Saturday and lasted more than three hours, saw 12 suspected bookies caught in Sungai Way, Kota Damansara, Damansara Damai, Kayu Ara Damansara and other locations.

Petaling Jaya, ACP Police Chief Nik Ezanee Mohd Faisal said the suspects, who included a foreigner and are between 22 and 70 years old, had carried out the illegal activities from restaurants, various shops, houses and commercial lots. .

He said the assault groups also seized cell phones, more than RM4,000 and miscellaneous material related to illegal lottery activities.

Nik Ezanee said the dozen suspects are being investigated for illegal lottery activities and for preventing a public servant from carrying out his duties under the laws of the Common Gambling Houses Act of 1953 and the Penal Code.

In another case, Nik Ezanee said a 27-year-old foreign woman believed to have been the victim of exploitation by a network of vices was rescued by police in front of a four-star hotel here at 8 p.m. Monday.

He said that acting on the basis of information obtained from an online application that offered sexual services, the police arrested a 49-year-old man whose role was to transport women for clients of the vice network.

Nik Ezanee said the suspect claimed that he worked for a man known as “Kenny” and was paid RM 1,600 per month.

He said the victim told police that she had only started working as a prostitute for the past three weeks and that she was paid RM320 for each client she saw.

However, the woman said she had to hand over the entire sum to the suspect.

Nik Ezanee said the woman was placed in a shelter while the suspect was in pretrial detention for seven days and is being investigated for human trafficking.
