PETALING JAYA: The death toll from Covid-19 in the country reached a new record with 12 new deaths in a single day.

Health Director General Tan Sri Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah (Photo) said that all the deaths were recorded in Sabah and that the victims were between 14 and 82 years old.

“The 14-year-old was a foreigner with a history of tuberculosis, meningitis and hydrocephalus.

“His pre-existing conditions exacerbated the complications. He could have died of tuberculosis or Covid-19, ”he said.

The teenager died at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Kota Kinabalu.

On October 23, ten people died in the third wave of the country’s pandemic, the highest at that time.

Of the total number of fatalities at the time, eight occurred in Sabah and one in Kedah and Labuan.

The latest deaths have brought the death toll to 263 across the country.

Yesterday we also saw 1,054 new cases of Covid-19, bringing the number to 34,939.

So far, there were 10,135 active cases, said Dr. Noor Hisham.

He also said Sabah remained the state with the highest number of cases with 678 new infections reported there.

“A total of 310 cases came from clusters in prisons and detention centers, 150 cases in the Klang Valley and another 81 cases in Labuan.

“There were also 14 imported cases involving three Malaysians and 11 foreigners who returned from South Korea, Japan, the Philippines, Uzbekistan, China, Hong Kong, Nepal, Great Britain and the Maldives.

“Currently 94 patients are being treated in intensive care units and 32 require ventilators,” he said.

Dr. Noor Hisham said 875 patients were discharged yesterday, bringing the total number of recoveries to 23,995.

On the other hand, he said they would propose periodic examinations for members of Parliament and Parliament staff to curb infections there.

“We will propose to Dewan Rakyat’s spokesperson, Datuk Azhar Azizan Harun, that screenings be held every two weeks instead of three days before the meeting starts.

“Parliamentarians and other workers are at risk of being exposed to Covid-19 in the six weeks they are in Parliament, so I hope the proposal will be considered,” he said, reminding those who need to be in Parliament to get tested. before attending meetings.

He said they might also consider adding a new “orange” alert level to improve preventive measures to halt the rise in Covid-19 infections.

“An orange alert will be for areas that have between 21 and 40 new infections per day.

“We can consider measures such as tightening the conditional movement control order measures,” he added.
