Apple has unveiled a new iPad Air that is completely redesigned for 2020. In addition to having a new exterior, the new iPad Air runs on what appears to be the same chip that would power the next iPhone 12.
Up front, the new iPad Air features a 10.9 ″ Liquid Retina display that offers a resolution of 2360×1640 pixels. Although the screen stretches from edge to edge like the newer iPad Pro, it doesn’t come with Face Unlock. Instead, it still features Touch ID which is now built into the power button.
The new Air now comes with stereo speakers, which is ideal for viewing video content in landscape mode. Unfortunately, there is no longer a 3.5mm headphone jack, so you’ll have to either get a dongle or go completely wireless.
For the first time in the iPad lineup, Apple offers a total of 5 colors including silver, space gray, rose gold, green, and sky blue. Overall, it is only 6.1mm thick and weighs 458 grams for the WiFi model and 460 grams for the WiFi + cellular version.
Under the hood, it runs on a powerful 5nm A14 Bionic chip that features a 6-core CPU, a 4-core GPU, and a 16-core next-gen Neural Engine. According to Apple, this is the most powerful chip they have ever made and features 11.8 billion transistors.
For imaging, it has a single 12MP f / 1.8 main camera on the rear that supports 4K video recording up to 60fps and also does 240fps slow motion at 1080p resolution. On the front, the device has a 7MP selfie camera that supports FaceTime HD and 1080p video recording.
The new Air still has 10 hours of battery life and now charges via USB-C. A 20W USB-C power adapter and USB-C to USB-C charging cable are included. The USB-C port also supports a high-speed 5Gbps transfer rate and the ability to connect to external 4K monitors. It also supports WiFi 6, Bluetooth 5.0 and also Gigabit LTE with 30 bands for the cellular version.
In terms of accessories, the new iPad is compatible with the second-generation Apple Pencil, which can be magnetically attached to the iPad Air. It is also compatible with Magic Keyboard and uses the same version that is compatible with the 11 ″ iPad Pro.
