PETALING JAYA: The most recent closure of four water treatment plants will cause 1,139,008 homes in 1,279 areas in the Klang Valley to run out of water as of 6pm today, Air Selangor said.
This comes after the plants were forced to halt operations after another case of odor contamination was detected in Sungai Selangor.
Air Selangor said the affected areas include Kuala Lumpur and the districts of Petaling, Klang, Shah Alam, Kuala Selangor, Hulu Selangor, Gombak and Kuala Langat in Selangor.
He said “washing” activities have been carried out to reduce pollution levels in the river, adding that the pollution readings were eight TON (odor threshold number) at one plant and three TON at three other plants at 2:30 p.m. today.
The full list of affected areas can be found here.
Earlier today, the Selangor Water Management Authority (LUAS) said that the Rantau Panjang treatment plants, SSP1, SSP2 and SSP3 were forced to stop their operations at various times, between 12:20 p.m. and 12:45 p.m., after that a solvent-like odor was detected.
The odor contamination had recorded a reading of eight TON. LUAS controls at 6 am in the same area did not register any contamination.
Earlier this week, the state government approved amendments to the LUAS enactment that provide more severe penalties for polluting rivers used by treatment plants. This included a mandatory jail sentence and a fine of 1 million ringgit.
Last month, LUAS said that four water treatment plants had to be closed after odor contamination was detected in Sungai Selangor. The shutdown cut off water supplies to 1.19 million homes.
Earlier in September, pollution in Sungai Gong forced the closure of these same water treatment plants, disrupting supply to more than five million users in the Klang Valley.
