The following contains allll of the spoilers from the first half of Lucifer Season 5, which aired August 21 on Netflix.
As season “5A” of Lucifer ended with episode 8, entitled ‘Spoiler Alert’, a celebration of the heavenly family need the most divine of intervention – by father.
Because just when Lucifer and Chloe were once again right to take another step forward in their relationship – he was (possibly) about to confess his love, in the wake of them (finally) doing things pursued – the time came to a standstill within the LAPD area. To look around and find us in Amenadiel (who was with a ‘frozen’ Linda and Charlie), Lucifer was led by Michael to suspect that her brother’s fear of his baby as a mortal was a time of complete delay resolved.
As harsh words were exchanged (did Michael to make li’l Charlie sick, to prove a point?) and with the advent of Maze (yet quite that Luci kept her existence from her mother Lilith secret), began a tectonic two-on-two throwdown. After Maze got KO’d and Lucifer and Amenadiel teamed / winged up against Michael, de voice of all voices boomed, causing the bride to stop.
“That’s enough!” said God, appearing on the stairs landing, bathing in light (and playing through 24‘s Dennis Haysbert in a very cozy sweater). He got the boys ‘attention and said with a smile on his face,’ Children, you to know I hate it when you fight. ”
From the afternoon finals, TVLine came in with co-showrunners Ildy Modrovich and Joe Henderson.
TVLINE | Tell me about God….
ILDY MODROVICH | I will say this, we were nervous to bring God in. From the very beginning, in season 1, we said we would never go to hell and we said we would never have God. And it’s mostly because He’s been this man of mystery, right? [Lucifer] has always been about characters interpreting what His intentions are, as opposed to the man there actually being able to speak well no you, but I think we managed to walk a fine line for Him, and at the same time we get to know who He is.
TVLINE | Is there a reason why Lucifer Chloe has not yet told that he loves her? I thought maybe he was about to explain to her that the Devil is incapable of expressing love.
JOE | That’s a big part of Season 5B.
ILDY | I want to quote RuPaul, who says at the end of each The Drag Race of RuPaul, “If you can not love yourself, how will you love someone else?”
TVLINE | Those were some really nice scenes at the end of episode 5, where Amenadiel explains what Chloe’s real ‘gift’ to Lucifer is, and how she does not to make Lucifer is vulnerable but makes him want to to be vulnerable around them.
JOE | We wanted to figure out how the story could be made worth that idea, because for me that is such a relatable, simple, human thing, so we both want the tea, the exploration and get there. That’s thanks, because that was really important to us.
ILDY | I think a leading star for us in the series is basically holding all our characters accountable. We kind of designed hell, so it’s our own fault that puts us there, it’s always up to us, the choice is ours, and I think this is just another way of exploring that theme. It is Lucifer who makes him as he acts. No one lets us behave in a certain way. We choose our behavior.
TVLINE | Talk about the decision to make Charlie mortal. It seems like it would be more fun to literally fly a half-angel baby around!
JOE | We wanted to explore the relationship between Linda and Amenadiel, and Charlie is the focal point for that. Also, they are in a biracial relationship, with a biracial child, but it is also part-human / part-heavenly, and we wanted to explore the expectations of parenthood on our children. There’s that idea that you want them to both take after you but also be their own people, so how hard is it for parents to figure out if a child is choosing a different path or going in that direction? That can be both difficult, but strengthen a connection. The shorter answer is: We always try to choose the story that is harder on our characters because we are cruel and evil writers. [Laughs]
TVLINE | Maze has been pretty angry at Lucifer this season. How worried should we be about that friendship?
JOE | Maze had these torn wounds at the end of Season 4, Maze and Chloe really, and that’s why they’re pressed to the top of Season 5. But Maze is heartbroken. And as much as she’s crazy about Lucifer and the world, she’s really just crazy because she feels rejected, and that’s a lot of her journey this season that we’re investigating.
