HBO shared a preview of their next series Lovecraft Country during their virtual Comic-Con showcase on Saturday.
In the tense three-minute scene, the series’ main characters – Jonathan Majors’ Atticus, Jurnee Smollett-Bell’s Letitia, and Michael K. Williams’ Montrose – use the moonlight to find a secret passageway leading from a museum emptiness to an underground catacomb.
“Beware of all who walk the road,” an inscription warns, “the tide will always rise.”
After a couple teasers for the show, HBO also revealed the first official teaser for Lovecraft Country, which opens on August 16. As the title suggests, the series world is populated by the “Greater Gods” invented by HP Lovecraft, with a “Cthulhi” seen briefly in the preview:
Based on Matt Ruff’s 2016 novel of the same name, the series follows Atticus Freeman as he teams up with his friend Letitia and Uncle George to embark on a road trip through the 1950s Jim Crow America in search of her father disappeared. ” HBO said in a synopsis of the series produced by Jordan Peele and JJ Abrams. “This begins a fight to survive and overcome the racist terrors of white America and the terrifying monsters that could be ripped out of a Lovecraft paperback.”
