Steven Gerrard praised Liverpool’s “incredible achievement” by being crowned champion for the first time in the Premier League era.

The Reds received the crown on Thursday night when Manchester City’s loss to Chelsea left them 23 points behind the leaders with seven games to play.

Among those who marked the achievement was former captain Gerrard, who won two FA Cups and a Champions League with the club, but never claimed a league title.

Gerrard, now Rangers manager, wrote on Instagram: “Congratulations to all liverpoolfc for winning the Premier League. Incredible achievement by a fantastic team of top players.

“Led by a world-class manager and training team is also a special mention for FSG’s endorsement. And last and most importantly, fans who have waited 30 years. Let the party begin.”

One of Gerrard’s former teammates, Michael Owen, tweeted: “Congratulations LFC, what an amazing season and the best team by a mile!”

Current Liverpool players were also tweeting as they watched the events unfold at Stamford Bridge, as images circulated on social media that seemed to show many of them watching the game together.

Full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold wrote on Twitter: “Champions !!!!”

Midfielder James Milner wrote: “30 red years! Let’s enjoy it! Honored to be part of this team and this club ”

Referring to those who died in the Hillsborough disaster in 1989, advocate Dejan Lovren wrote: “96 – The dream came true”

And posting a screenshot of his phone showing four missed Alexander-Arnold calls, Andy Robertson joked, “I wonder what you want.”

Luis García, winner of the Champions League with the Reds in 2005, tweeted: “Congratulations to LFC! What a fantastic achievement.

“Congratulations to all the players, the staff, and the board member. I am not forgetting the supporters. Enjoy the moment, it’s been a long time, but it’s finally here!

Another member of that Champions League winning team, Djimi Traore, wrote: “Congratulations to LFC for winning the 2019-20 Premier League. Well deserves a trophy for Klopp and his team. Fantastic achievement for LFC YNWA “

Former Liverpool forward John Aldridge posted a video of himself celebrating with an inflatable trophy. Aldridge, who won the league with the Reds in 1987-88, tweeted, “What a wonderful feeling for all LFC fans around the world! I love it, it tore the league apart.”

Another former Liverpool forward, Fernando Torres, wrote: “Huge congratulations to everyone at the LFC for winning the first league. Amazing squad, great manager, great staff, but most of all my sincere thanks to all the LFC fans. You’ve been waiting so long and finally that desired trophy is yours. Very well deservedYNWA ”
