“I welcome the fact that the German government continues to maintain its position on Nord Stream 2,” Kurz told the German newspaper Welt am Sonntag.
According to the chancellor, this is the “European project”.
“Those who believe that the new pipeline is only in the interest of Russia are wrong,” he said.
Germany maintains that Nord Stream 2 is an economic project for its citizens, which must be implemented despite political disagreements with Russia.
Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Friday that Germany’s position on Nord Stream 2 would not change, despite the imprisonment of Kremlin critic Alexei Navaln and the expulsion of several EU diplomats from Russia.
On January 21, the European Parliament adopted a resolution on the arrest of Navaln, who was arrested as soon as he returned from Germany, where he was being treated for Novičiok, a nerve paralyzing substance created by Soviet scientists last August. MEPs called on the EU and its member states to critically review cooperation with Russia on various foreign policy platforms and projects such as Nord Stream 2, which the EU should terminate immediately.
Nord Stream 2 is owned by the Russian state company Gazprom, in which several European companies have invested. The construction of the gas pipeline was stopped in December 2019 when the Swiss company’s vessels stopped working due to the threat of US sanctions, and Gazprom was forced to try to complete it using available resources.
Nord Stream 2, which is being laid on the bed of the Baltic Sea, would double the volume of Russian gas supplied to Germany, Europe’s largest economy.
To date, more than 2.3 thousand. 2.46 thousand. kilometers, or 94%, of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.
