The Utena Juventus team (14/6) achieved another victory in the Betsafe-LKL championship in their last match against the final four of the Citadele King Mind Cup (Citadele KMT).
The pupils of Žydrūnas Urbonas dispersed the advantage of 18 points accumulated before the break at home 94:91 (27:18, 27:18, 12:29, 28:26) dramatically surpassed the resistance of Prienai CBet (7/14).
From the first minutes, the hosts of the court looked better, the show ahead 16: 4. After the match, the people of Prieniai stabilized the situation somewhat – 13:18, but the Utenians led by M. Gecevičius, who scored seven points in a row, they finished the fourth most successfully (27:18).
At the beginning of the second half, CBet did not allow the opponents, whose points were collected by Simas Jarumbauskas, to walk away – 27:34. After Ignas Vaitkas, Einaras Tubutis and Žygimantas Skučius achieved all three points, round numbers appeared on the scoreboard: 40:30 in favor of the hosts. The latter did not continue to slow down – in the first half of the match, M. Gecevičius crossed the 50-point limit with three points and left the locker room with a strong lead – 54:36.
After the break, the opponents immediately cut their deficit in half (46:55) and forced the opposing strategist to ask for a minute of rest. Still, even after that, the guests continued to reduce the delay in an instant: 58:61. Vytautas Šulskis scored 5 points in a row for the hosts, but Marquis Wright and Tomas Digbeu, who scored points for the opponents, practically eliminated the difference (65:66).
At the beginning of the fourth quarter, the field was a persistent fight: the teams exchanged precise shots and the difference was consistently small. For the first time in the game, M. Wright’s shot put Prieniai’s team ahead, which was soon ahead 77:73. With 3 minutes left in the game, the visitors were still leading by 2 points – 83:81, and then their substitute players’ bench received a technical foul. However, the hosts failed to take advantage of this penalty and, with a minute and a half to play, they were still 2 points behind – 86:88.
Mindaugas Sušinskas then scored the fifth free kick, which M. Gecevičius converted on two precise free throws, tying the score – 88:88. On the other side of the square, the Utena people came back to defend, and Ž.Skučas (90:88) scored 2 important points for them. After the break, Gigutas Matulis saved T. Digbeu’s foul, but the Frenchman threw only one free kick, while M. Gecevičius realized both: 92:89. The Prieni people lost two more 1-point shots and finally capitulated: Juventus won by 94:91.
