Fire-destroyed church in Klaipeda will be reborn as parsonage

In 2008, the old wooden church on Smiltelės Street was destroyed by fire, leaving ruins on the site of a building 25 meters long and 12 meters wide. Fortunately, at that time the church was no longer used as a house of prayer, as a new brick church was already in operation nearby. At that time, the donations collected by Carito were kept in the building.

Now, preparations are finally being made to order the ruins, the environment and the parish community to be invited to a new space.

At the request of the parish, the Port City Project prepared project proposals, which presented a project for the reconstruction of old houses of worship.

At present, only the foundations and the brick economic part (fixed in the inventory) of the old registered building have survived. The height of the remaining part of the building was recorded after geodetic measurements.

The parish priest, Vladas Gedgaudas, told the Western Express that he had long wanted to have a parsonage where believers could choose.

We have several other locations, but they don’t meet the needs. The plans were to order the brick church first and then we planned to build a parsonage. But the epidemiological situation is so complicated that I don’t even know how we will implement those plans. Of course, we will look for ways, we will not abandon plans in any way. Today it is necessary to have a parish house, because we are not only together at Mass, but also close to the ceremonies, ”said the parish priest.

It is planned that after the reconstruction the building will have 1 floor with an attic.

The rectory will have rooms for gatherings, meetings for separate groups of people, as well as a hall for events with 206 seats.

The entrance to the plot is left existing from Varpų street. Walking paths will be laid out in the rebuilt building, lawns damaged during construction will be restored, and new trees will be planted – individual trees.

According to V. Gedgaudas, church-organized events and town community meetings will take place at the rectory.

“It just came to our attention then. Needless to say, cooperation only feeds,” said the cleric.

For the coronavirus, plans have been suspended, but the parish community is already considering how to implement the project. Depending on the pastor, it may be necessary to seek sponsors or write projects when seeking funding.

“We would not be very successful in building with the parish forces alone, we will really need to seek support,” said V. Gedgaudas.

When asked when parishioners could already expect to gather in new spaces, the pastor did not dare to predict how long the works would last. According to him, first it is important to wait until everyone can return to a normal rhythm of life and it will be clearer how the implementation of the project is going.
