An alternative to sand
Grinda announced on Facebook that you can try to make sure that the sidewalks and roads of the capital are not sprinkled with salt or sand, but with coffee grounds.
“It is quite possible that the idea born on Sunday afternoon will become an important initiative for the entire city and attractive to many Vilnius residents. And it was like this: Povilas Poderskis shared a message found on the Internet that some cities use salt instead of salt in winter … coffee grounds.
Coffee grounds are in fact a great alternative to sanding sidewalks or stairs: since coffee grounds are often used for composting, coffee grounds used for paving should not be collected and disposed of as garbage in the spring; they can be used to fertilize urban vegetation here, ”wrote Grinda.
Currently there are three boxes for coffee grounds in Vilnius, at Gedimino Ave. 35, Avda. Gedimino. and Totorių st. at the intersection and Vokiečių street, near popular cafes. But for now, the boxes are empty.
The boxes are standing, the thickness is low.
“Two companies were asked to spray coffee grounds on the sidewalks: UAB Mano Aplinka and Vilnius City Parks. They look at where to spread out, they look at the contents of the boxes, but at least for the moment, the boxes are empty, ”said Gintautas Runovičius, Head of the Department of City Order and Environmental Protection of Vilnius Municipality.
Two companies have been asked to spread coffee grounds on the sidewalks, look at the contents of the boxes, but at least for the moment, the boxes are empty, said G.Runovičius.
Laisvūnas Budėnas, the director of Vilnius city parks, also said that until now, even if they wanted to, they couldn’t spray anything with coffee grounds, in a box where there are practically no coffee grounds near Lukiškės Square.
“Yesterday we checked, today we checked that box near the cafe on Gedimino Avenue. 35, not that they still have those coffee grounds. Waiting for them to collect, there were some, but not so much that we could start to disperse. Hopefully more and more people will find out about this experiment, we are looking forward to it, maybe what else will the coffee bring.
We would love to sprinkle coffee because we try not to spread sand in the parks, let alone salt. We have announced how we clean the paths in the parks in the winter: we try to allow people to crush them and then, let’s say, you can walk perfectly in Vingis Park and no recreation is required. This is when it’s cold. When it starts to melt, you will have to spread, ”said L. Budėnas.

The painting mentioned near av. Gedimino. 35 is dedicated to Lukiškės square – the paths are cleared there, so at least one could be sprinkled with coffee grounds.
“It just came to our knowledge then. I guess it really wouldn’t be that slippery. But more coffee is needed,” L. Budėnas said.
We would like to sprinkle coffee, because we try not to spread sand in the parks, the more we do not sprinkle salt, – said L. Budėnas.
My Environment employees have also checked the boxes, but say they have found too little coffee grounds to help spread the word on the streets of Vilnius. However, it is promised that when it is possible to cope with the heavy snowfall on Tuesday, the boxes will be inspected more frequently and this innovation will be applied in the city.
Negotiate with the gas station network
The Vilnius City Municipality also turns its head where to get more coffee.
So far it does not reveal concrete plans and ideas, but it is known that it is the “Circle K” gas station network.
Lina Katinė is the representative of this network 15 minutes He said that so far it has not been possible to provide specific information on the quantities that the network could supply for broadcast on the streets of Vilnius, as the details of the deal are being harmonized.
“Currently, we are detailing the possible amounts of ground coffee residues, collection process and storage. In case of success in Vilnius, we can be partners in such a project on a national scale and use the coffee grounds generated at all gas stations in Lithuania. Gas stations are conveniently located: they can supply ground coffee not only to large cities but also to smaller towns.
This is a very big initiative, we will be happy to be able to use the coffee waste accumulated in the service stations in a meaningful way and contribute to the increase in cleanliness in the city ”, said L. Katinė.
Following the announcement of this initiative, doubts have been raised about whether the coffee grounds in the boxes will not freeze, but it is said that the grounds from the coffees will be quite dry, so they are not expected to freeze.
