The party’s executive secretary, Martynas Prevelis, told BNS that the TS-LKD council had approved the schedule for Saturday’s presidential elections and that nominations began on Sunday.
So far, only the Visaginas subsidiary of the TS-LKD has managed to hold a meeting on this issue. Nominate the current leader, Chancellor Gabriel Landsbergis, as party leader.
The nomination of candidates is scheduled for February 23, and the final list will be released on February 26.
According to the schedule, the first round of elections will take place from March 27 to 28 and, if necessary, the second round will take place from April 24 to 25.
For the first time, the Conservative leader will be elected in so-called open elections, when not only party members but also their supporters who have registered for the elections have the right to vote.
Lithuanian citizens over 16 years of age who do not belong to other parties or electoral committees and support the values of TS-LKD will be able to register for elections on Election Day.
By registering, the person will also acquire the status of party sponsor. According to M. Prevelis, this will allow him to participate in all upcoming open party elections without additional registration, be informed about his work and, in his opinion, influence future party decisions.
The registration of non-matches will take place from February 27 to March 23.
The election of the President of the TS-LKD due to the epidemiological situation will be organized only by postal and online voting. Non-party members who have registered to vote will only be able to vote online.
According to the statutes of TS-LKD, the results of the election of the party chairman are announced during the congress, the congress participants do not need to approve them.
G. Landsbergis has led TS-LKD since 2015.
In 2017, 5,539 party members or 62.4 percent voted for him in direct elections.
