More than 70 MEPs have called for the resignation of the EU’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, after his eminent visit to Moscow. However, the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, fully supports the diplomat.
At that time, the call for Borrell’s resignation was initiated by Estonian MEP Rih Terras, a member of the Group of the European People’s Party. 73 European MPs, including Ras Jukneviien, Petr Autrevii, Aur Maldeikien and Liud Mayl, signed it yesterday.
Commenting on Borrell’s visit to Moscow, after which Russia sent three EU diplomats in support of Alexei Navaln, Terras called it a complete disaster.
At the time, the head of EU diplomacy did not defend EU interests, made false statements about EU sanctions, approved the Russian Sputnik V vaccine and did not interrupt the trip even after Russia sent German diplomats, Poles and Swedes.
Borrell did not defend the interests of the EU when Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov criticized the European Union and the United States. Lavrov said EU leaders were misled and severely arrogant, accusing Russia of trying to assassinate Navaln. Instead of superstitious S. Lavrov, J. Borrell will attack the main allies of the United States on Cuba, according to parliamentarians.
MEPs ask Mr von der Leyen to act if Borrell does not voluntarily resign.
okiai on ice hockey
Russia has shown everything, it is believed that it took the top diplomat of the EU, says Terras.
I understand that you want to weave a dialogue. But when one plays hockey, the other cannot oki on the ice, as happened in Moscow, the Estonian MEP wakes up.
He said former EC commissioner Phil Hogan had resigned in August last year because he had attended a dinner for the coronavir restriction. According to Terras, the Irish commissioner committed a much lesser crime than Borrell’s.
Parliament is used to the difficulty of waiting for Mr Borrell to resign himself to such an important post, so it has been decided to ask President von der Leyen to request his resignation from the European Council.
I hope our time demonstrates the need for a united European policy on Russia, said Mr Terras. According to him, one of the first steps could be the withdrawal of Germany from the Nord Stream 2 project.
Do not open beyond the fence
In an attempt to defend his actions in Moscow, Borrell issued a statement Sunday about a very difficult visit and a very aggressive press conference.
The Russian government did not want to take this opportunity to engage in a more constructive dialogue with the EU. I’m sorry and we’ll have to make a presentation, says Mr. Borrell. However, you are used to seeing EU diplomats sent to Moscow only on social media.
Borrell will report to the European Parliament on Tuesday afternoon about his superstitious visit to Moscow and a press conference with Minister Lavrov.
On Monday evening, the Office of the EU High Representative’s Office commented that Mr Borrell did not regret the visit to Moscow, as Russia was taking European positions.
Diplomats must act even when they are unhappy, when couples are difficult. You have to go and have the courage to make sacrifices on the other side of the fence, according to the representative of J. Borrell.
EC presidential support
EC spokesman Eric Mamer told reporters on Monday that von der Leyen was fully in favor of the government on his trip to Moscow, according to Politico.
However, E. Mamer did not comment on the time of the European parliamentarian, he will say that it has not yet been received.
Speaking to journalists, EC foreign policy spokesman Peter Stano defended Borrell’s decision not to react to Lavrov’s attack on the EU during a press conference in Moscow.
As for what Lavrov said, there was basically nothing new. That’s what the Russian government has always said, Stano said, emphasizing that Borrell is a diplomat and that a press conference is not a platform for discussion or confrontation.
The High Representative was silent because he spoke a lot during the negotiations with Lavrov, Stano said.
According to him, J. Borrell asked S. Lavrov to visit A. Navaln in prison, but S. Lavrov refused and offered to make such a request during the Russian court proceedings. This was not possible given the length of the visit to Moscow, Stan said, saying that a senior representative of Borrell’s delegation in Moscow had met with Navaln’s lawyer.
