According to road users, slippery road sections, snow accumulation and reduced visibility due to wind can occur.
“Currently 300 machines are on the road, we are working at full capacity. The snowstorm that started yesterday is expected to get serious by the end of the day. Drivers must remain vigilant, even if they are driving on a clean and splattered road. – loose snow and wind can cause ‘tongues’ of snow and slippery stretches of road. The blizzard also significantly reduces visibility ”, warns Petras Džervus, representative of the company.
When the blizzard persists and a section of the road clears, it quickly swells again. In such weather conditions, the effect of salt spread is usually short-lived, as it begins to melt the snow on the road, the pavement gets wet, and the snow blowing underground sticks even more to the wet pavement, making it slippery. Therefore, a lot of attention is paid to intensive street cleaning.
According to road users, traffic conditions can be very different depending on the wind direction in relation to the road and the road environment: in one section there may be dry and clean pavement, in another – “tongues” of formed snow, in the third formed snow accumulations, which can impede passability.
When driving through a blizzard, special care must be taken when entering or leaving a forest or settlement, on sections of road where the road changes direction, as well as on sections where the road embankment changes to a excavation or vice versa.
These days, “black” ice can appear on the roads. It is formed when the tires of cars driving on the road heat up the asphalt, the road surface becomes hot and slippery, but it is cooled by the winter air and the frozen road surface, the wind guides. If you feel the car “float” while driving, it means you are driving on “black” ice. You should then slowly slow down and relax your driving maneuvers.
