“The objective situation in the police organization is such that according to the officially approved positioning methodology, we currently lack about 1,400 officers,” R. Požėla said at a press conference after the meeting of the State Emergency Commission.
He believes that the police officer shortage was due to decisions made before he became Commissioner General of Police.
“Everything was there, the officers also left because of the low salary, and there were some reorganizations at various times, when the number of police officers was reduced, perhaps to intensify the activities of the remaining employees and give them a higher salary,” he said.
However, R. Požėla claims that he will have a clear vision of how to resolve the situation.
“We plan to recruit up to 200 police officers this year. Basically, it would be prevention personnel, the same community officials who would work with the public, and probably criminal police investigators who would work in territorial police stations to investigate specific crimes,” he said.
