Scientists have a brighter knowledge of the coronavirus: When will the greatest burden of a pandemic disappear?

Tum Beinort, a physician at Cambridge University Hospital, praised the knowledge about the resistance of vaccines to mutations at Delfi Day.

“Studies have shown that the vaccine is not effective against new strains. It actually works much better than without the vaccine. The protection is less, but this is not absolute resistance to the current immunity of the virus. Vaccination protects against serious diseases, at least in the short term. People who became infected after vaccination were not seriously ill. That’s good news, “says Beinort.

Virus researcher Gytis Dudas also emphasized in the program that vaccination can reduce the greatest burden of a pandemic: overcrowding in hospitals.

“One of the brightest things about this story is that these vaccines protect against clinical cases. The course of the disease becomes easier. This means that if everyone is vaccinated, when the entire population is covered by the vaccine, we can hope that hospitals will not be overloaded and the greatest burden of the pandemic will automatically disappear, ”said the researcher.

Even vaccinated people can transmit the virus.

It is true that while the vaccine can protect against serious disease, it does not mean that even a vaccinated person cannot transmit the virus. And this, as the scientist assured, poses a great threat.

“We are observed in Lithuania in around thirty varieties. There are many of these strains, and not all of them differ in the human immune system. (…) Another thing I want to mention is that a place where one should not relax is that after everyone is vaccinated, yes, we will be protected from serious clinical diseases, but until then people should be vaccinated first, because if the vaccine it does not completely protect against infection, which means that people can still contract the virus after being vaccinated, so this complication exists, “says the researcher.

By asking how long we can be calm when we get vaccinated, Beinort assures us that in a sense the same thing or risk is possible.

“So far, we only have population studies from Israel. We see that we can be calm enough to get vaccinated in two doses. One dose of the vaccine provides only partial protection. It won’t be 100 percent protection, but it will be protection. very significant of around 80-90 percent, if those new mutations don’t spread in Lithuania, if they do, then we may be less calm. In the end, we still have to understand that there are risks, but we will have to accept some of the risks ”Says Beinort.

“I think it’s a pretty realistic scenario that every two or three years the coronavirus vaccination will have to be effective enough. Here is my interpretation, we will see if it will be like this ”, added the scientist.
