We are talking about ‘bubbles’, we still need expert opinion, but I think it is a possible option. Inequalities can arise, but my main goal is to get children back to school as soon as possible. “The bubble is one of the options,” the minister told LRT radio on Tuesday.

J.Šiugždinienė previously stated that she was convinced that primary school children could return to school in late February after school holidays, but only if COVID-19 morbidity rates did not exceed 200 cases per 100 thousand. population, and the proportion of positive tests will be less than 10 percent.

In some municipalities of the country, if this indicator is reached earlier, according to the Minister, the earlier return of children from primary school can be considered.

“It can be assumed that then unequal conditions appear, in some municipalities it is possible to return, in others it would not be possible to return, but it seems to me that if it is possible, it is necessary to return to the schools,” J. Šiugždinienė said.

The minister also stressed on Tuesday that another important criterion is the vaccination of Early Childhood and Primary Education teachers. These teachers are expected to be vaccinated in February.

He said he did not yet have precise information on whether there were already vaccinated educators. According to J.Šiugždinienė, their tests are currently ongoing.

Certainly I will not be left out, vaccinations are not mandatory, but I strongly believe in the conscience of educators and I believe that the majority will be vaccinated.

The minister also said that he was confident that the teachers would be aware and most of them would agree to be vaccinated.

“I will definitely not stay around, vaccination is not mandatory, but I strongly believe in the teachers’ conscience and I believe that most of them will be vaccinated,” said J. Šiugždinienė.

Most of the students, excluding those in primary school, switched to distance or blended learning since November 7 of last year with the introduction of the second quarantine. Since the adoption of the tightening in mid-December, there has been a shift towards universal distance education, with beginners on vacation and, starting in January, also distance learning only. Distance learning was also introduced during the first quarantine last spring.

The government has allowed all classes of students who have difficulty learning from home to return to school starting January 21.
