As the need for a sanitary landfill persists, it is planned to announce a new tender for a feasibility study in the near future to identify suitable potential areas for the establishment of a new military landfill. Currently, the Lithuanian Armed Forces are refining the criteria and technical specifications that would be raised when organizing a tender for services for the whole Lithuanian environmental assessment study.
The study will aim to find out which place on the territory of Lithuania would be suitable for the needs of military exercises, as well as the possibility of expanding existing landfills.
2020 At the request of the Ministry of National Defense, a study has already been carried out on the identification of areas for a possible new military training ground. A study by the Vilnius Gediminas Technical University had identified potential areas in western Lithuania that could potentially be suitable for military landfills according to established criteria (no large settlements, no nature reserves, large cultivated agricultural areas, etc.), such places were named three: Telšiai and Mažeikiai d. in the territories of the municipalities, Siauliai and Akmene d. in the territories of the municipalities or in the district of Kelme. in the territory of the municipality.
The new study will be conducted in accordance with revised requirements and specifications, which include environmental, demographic, economic and geological criteria that the future site must meet to be suitable for maneuvering and shooting exercises for soldiers and military equipment. The new military training center should allow the simultaneous organization of maneuver exercises for two battalions (more than 1,000 soldiers with military equipment) and shooting exercises for two units the size of a company.
During recent years, the intensive modernization and development of the Lithuanian Armed Forces, the establishment of new military units, the acquisition and acquisition of new armaments have reached all the limits of the possibilities of military training in the existing training grounds and , therefore, the need for a territory adapted for military exercises.
Soldiers from both Lithuania and other NATO countries in Lithuania, who are integrated into the Lithuanian defense system, are trained in the territories and military training camps available, therefore employment in these areas is today overcrowded and not offers sufficient conditions for Lithuanian and Allied soldiers. train together.
Military training grounds are areas for the training of soldiers, but they do not have the full status of military territory. When there is no training, you can visit, mushrooms, berries and rest. The landfills are also subject to strict NATO environmental requirements, restricted hunting, and commercial deforestation.
Existing practice shows that the establishment of a landfill increases new opportunities for local businesses and people, builds new infrastructure: roads, gas, power lines, water supply, attracts investment and orders the environment, increases demand and value of real estate. The final decision on the establishment of a military landfill or the development of existing ones will be taken by the Government or, if the establishment of the landfill is recognized as a project of special state importance, by the Seimas.
