Artūras Zubrickas, a traumatologist at the Vilnius Republican University Hospital, says that this year he has not yet treated patients who have suffered injuries from falling from an icicle. The doctor hopes not to have to accept such a patient, because an icicle on the head can cause fatal injuries.

Encourages looking around the street

Dr. A. Zubrick encourages you to look at the roofs of the buildings as you walk through the buildings. Icicles can hang there. The doctor advises that if you notice pieces of ice that have already fallen on the sidewalk, you should not relax. Ice can fall back.

“The most common are blow injuries, concussions, and skull fractures. Depending on the size of the icicle, the disaster can be fatal.

A person may lose consciousness after receiving a severe blow to the head. Memory can be affected and pain can occur. When there is nothing, there may be nothing and only after that do you start to feel nauseous, you have a headache, you may have disturbed sensations and vision, “the traumatologist mentions the danger of icicles.

There are also penalties

Adomas Bužinskas, deputy director of the Vilnius city municipal administration, says that snow accumulations and icicles are often seen as a minor problem.

“However, the consequences of their landslides can be tragic for both homeowners and passersby. We kindly ask the owners of buildings and other massive structures to take care of the safety of their property and its surroundings,” says A Bužinskas.

Caregivers or building users should clean the edge of the roof to prevent dangerous icicles from forming. Failure to do so can result in fines of several hundred to several thousand euros.

Violations of the Management and Cleaning Standards are sanctioned with a fine of 20 to 140 euros, for measures to protect people, not avoid an accident or breach legal obligations in the event of an accident of a used building, if the condition of the building , a fine will be imposed on the users of the building and (or) the technical supervisors of the building of 300 to 1500 euros, to the technical supervisors of the building – of the legal persons from 1000 to 5000 euros; in the case of a special structure, a fine of between 2,000 and 10,000 euros is imposed.
