One of the most famous Lithuanian cinematographers, Jonas Gricius, has died

“Jonas Gricius’s contribution to Lithuanian cinema is so enormous that it would even be difficult to describe it in a few sentences. He influenced both the feature film and the documentary, trained the entire generation of cinematographers, and ultimately elevated cinematography to international heights, ”director Audrius Stonys told BNS on Monday.

J. Gricius was born in 1928 in Kaunas. He studied at the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography (VGIK) in Moscow and did an internship at Lenfilm film studio for three years.

In 1957, J. Gricius returned to Lithuania, he worked in the Lithuanian film studio as a cameraman and director.

From 1994 to 2001, he taught at the Academy of Music and Theater and taught a course in film and television cinematography.

J. Gricius received the titles of a deserving artistic figure of the LSSR, a popular artist, VGIK awarded him the title of Honorary Professor, he received the Commander’s Cross of the Order of Gediminas, the statue of the Golden Crane. In 2013, the artist received the National Prize for Culture and Art.
